Balance Your Life

Healthy Hot Chocolate

Making healthy hot chocolate is very simple! Below is my current favourite recipe.

1) A heaped tablespoon of smooth peanut butter blended with 1 to 1.5 cups of water to create ‘peanut butter milk’.
2) 20-25g cacao paste buttons*
3) Inulin powder to sweeten (Chicory root inulin is a natural fibre that’s also anti-inflammatory)
4) A splash of oat milk (optional – it sweetens the drink). You can make your own oat milk easily by blending oats with water; or you can add a spoonful of oats to the blender with the peanut butter and water and blend until smooth.
5) Alternatively use any milk, nut milk or oat milk of your choosing.

1) Heat the peanut butter milk to boiling point.
2) Add the cacao buttons and give them a couple of minutes to melt into the milk. (Do not heat the cacao)
3) Add a sprinkle of inulin powder (5-10ml).
4) Whisk with a hand held milk frother until foamy.
5) You can also add MCT oil, and any of your heat-resistant, unflavoured supplements, for example, inositol, creatine, collagen powder. Some of these will create a thicker drink.
6) Adjust ratios to suit your tastes.

*Cacao comes in many forms. The buttons melt quickly into a smooth paste. They’re also known as liquor buttons, but to avoid any confusion, they do not contain any alcohol.
Criollo cacao is considered to be the highest quality, and is the cacao used in sacred cacao ceremonies. It’s also the least bitter of the cacao beans.

Healthy Hot Chocolate

Try this DELICIOUS organic cacao powder from RealFoodSource
It’s my favourite because it makes a really silky cup of naturally low-calorie hot chocolate by just adding hot water and a sprinkle of Himalayan salt.

Adding a splash of hazelnut milk creates a creamy hot chocolate drink.

Great when you need a chocolate fix!

Try the recipe below for an indulgent hot chocolate with a twist.
