Relax…
The purpose of meditation is to induce a feeling of relaxation.
If you need clarity of mind, then learning to meditate will be of great benefit to you.
It’s simple to learn, and practiced daily, will reap many benefits.
Meditation is extremely effective in helping to reduce stress and tension, which is particularly important for people living busy lives.
MRI scans show that after an eight-week course of mindfulness practice, the brain’s “fight or flight” centre, the amygdala, shrinks in size. This primal region of the brain, associated with fear and emotion, is involved in the initiation of the body’s response to stress, so shrinking it is a good thing!

The technical bit!
Research studies show that practising meditation regularly helps people reduce their bodies’ responses to stress by lowering blood pressure, slowing heart rate, reducing oxygen intake, and changing the brain waves to a more relaxed state. Moderating the stress response lowers blood glucose levels.
Mindfulness meditation reduces levels of stress hormones including cortisol, norepinephrine and epinephrine. Hormones such as cortisol contribute toward weight gain and belly fat and insulin resistance.
A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed transcendental meditation can help people with diabetes control their blood sugar levels. It can also lower blood pressure and reduce insulin resistance.
When we are going about our day to day activities, we are usually in a state of low or moderate beta brainwave frequencies, when routine thinking and physical functioning occurs. High Beta frequencies reflect a state of heightened anxiety or stress due to mental over-activity.
When in a state of meditation, we are usually experiencing Alpha or Theta frequencies.
Alpha frequencies represent a relaxed state associated with external attention. It is the wakeful state of relaxed and effortless alertness. Alpha waves are utilised for mental relaxation, accelerated learning, for creative process and for peak performance. Alpha waves are brought about by light meditation, reading a good book, soaking in a bubble bath or going for a quiet walk in the countryside.
Theta frequencies represent a deeply relaxed state of free flowing inward focus. We naturally enter into the theta state for a few minutes just before falling asleep and just before entering the waking state, when imagery is produced without conscious effort. It is also the deep meditation state and the seat of the creative process.
